Whats incredible is that almost everything in the demo was created from scratch, including the art, sound, even the engine The hard work shows too, as while the game still has a retro vibe, its a big 3D landscape full of life, and more in line with the kind of Sonic game I always hoped to see, not the well Im youve played some of the monstrosities from Sega over the years Sonic Utopia is an experiment that not only tries to expand on Sonic gameplay in an intuitive way in 3D, but also aims to capture the best of Sonics style and tie it together in a cohesive experience.Nearly everything in this demo, from art to sound to the gameplay engine, was made from scratch.

It makes sense for a more strict, Classic Sonic-physics-based level design, with a clear direction and meaning to the momentum behind it, like GHP, but I dunno about it in here. The momentum and physics arent tied down to computer performance and even on non gaming PCs, this runs decently. Sonic at any speed is smooth and fun to control but maybe a little bit slippery in spots depending on if youre landing on platforms that are far away. Oh its fun to control but I did expect this to have a little more going on in it which wasnt something I was having a problem with in Green Hill Paradise. ![]() Every Badnik has its own reactions and sound effects and the variety of things to see go on here is nothing short of dazzling for a game that isnt as demanding as a UDK game. Fun and fluid. The level itself Serviceable and certainly fun when you really get into it. Its just a little flat in places I expect to have more to do. Landmark level design is a good way to make sure your level feels good to progress through. I did have fun here and the levels best offerings were in finding the secrets much like Paradise Final Mix. It doesnt feel like theres enough to do and yet the map is huge, you know. Youre showing Sega the way to do anything. Seriously. Good work. But, otherwise, this is the best Sonic has ever controlled in anything 3D. Sonic steers very well at about all speeds, rolling feels ultra satisfying, the jump homing attack is sublime when timed properly, air control feels just floaty enough and very maneuverable. It feels like the most solid translation of the classic gameplay since Sonic Adventure, if not slightly better, what with all the polish. A button to shift andor lock the camera behind Sonic would be nice, because seeing where youre going is kind of tough at times. If they added stuff like a wall jump wall run into the mix, a side jump (like in Mario 64) for reaching slightly-too-high platforms, and stuff like the elemental shields, light dash and grind rails; this would be beyond excellent. Its got some really fun scenarios and VERY satisfying areas when it comes to slopes and loops, and the secret areas make you want to explore a lot. The level is huge, but for the most part very flat and spread way far apart, and doesnt really give a good idea on direction. In other words, something more linear, but not to the point of losing how much freedom you can have with mechanics like these. Utopia gets close to this in areas, but the lack of aim does kinda make you forget incentive; despite as fun as it gets at times. Pretty sure I dont have any controllers plugged into my computer either. The smoothness of the gameplay is lightyears ahead of GHP, and flying off a ramp, duck-and-curling, and landing the downhill portion of another hill to gain even more speed is pure bliss. The homing attack is much smoother than the GHP counterpart, and actually adjusts to consider your height, almost reaching that bounce you could pull off in the classics. One of the features of it, though, is that it only works inline with your momentum.
